Crazy (and slightly spooky) robot

Boston Dynamics "Big Dog"

The robot is loud, but the things it does are pretty amazing. The part where I went "Whoa. That's crazy." is around 36 seconds in. If they quieted it down, it would be really creepy.

All the noise comes from what I'm presuming is a pneumatic compressor they're using to to power the legs. You can tell since the thing becomes pretty durn quite while in the test lab.

Spoiler:
I've got to believe it's got a massive gyro in it too, that kick was brutal.

What freaks the living daylights out of me is that last little segment. Holy frak!

... so who want's in on my next project?

Wave of the future? or the vanguard of the robot uprising?

I first saw this about a year ago but I think they've definitely made it freakier since then. The part that really got me was on the ice, it just seemed a bit... too real, not in the "zomg it's fake" kind of way but in the "holy crap it almost looks alive" kind of way.

I wonder if it uses accelerometers to tell when its falling. I'm thinking... wiimote with legs??

Terrifyingly awesome. The really scary thing is that I almost felt bad when they kicked the robot.

Up until the ice, I was wondering if it was the work of two extremely talented mimes. Then shit was bending in all directions. I was then convinced.

Seriously. It was all "Oh no, I'm going to fall over! Why would you do that to me?"

The mistake there was in attacking it and not destroying it.

Now I know where the Imperial Walkers come from and I believe less that Luke Skywalker, as badass as he is can take one down ... even with tow cable
